Top Tips for Keeping Cut Flowers Fresh

You’ve just been gifted a stunning bouquet from your favourite Byron Bay florist, or perhaps you’ve handpicked blooms from your own garden. Either way, fresh flowers have a way of bringing a touch of magic into any space, filling the room with beauty and life.

While flowers don’t last forever you can extend their beauty and enjoy their magic for just a bit longer using these helpful tips.

Use a Clean Vase

This may seem obvious, but the biggest reason your flowers don’t last long is bacteria buildup. To keep your blooms fresher for longer, the key is to minimise bacteria growth. Start by making sure your vase is squeaky clean—wash it with soapy water and rinse thoroughly. You can take things a step further by rinsing the vase with a solution of one part vinegar to ten parts water to help kill bacteria.

Change The Water

Hydration is key to keeping your fresh flowers, well, fresh! Always place your stems in clean water, as stagnant water promotes bacteria growth, which can clog the stems and prevent proper absorption. To keep your blooms at their best, change the water every day (or two days at a minimum), rinse the vase thoroughly, and re-trim the stems.

Cut The Stems

So, why do you need to re-trim your stems? One reason is that air pockets can get trapped inside, preventing water from reaching the right parts of your flowers. Giving the stems a good trim at a 45-degree angle stops the stems from sitting flat against the bottom of the vase and ensures maximum absorption. Re-trim the stems every two days (or when changing the water) to prevent bacteria from accumulating on the ends and to reopen the stem.

Avoid Direct Sunlight

Plants and flowers thrive in sunlight, but too much heat can cause your bouquet to lose moisture quickly, leading to drooping petals and dehydration. While it’s tempting to place your fresh blooms on a sunny windowsill or in a bright, open space, this can shorten their lifespan. To keep your flowers fresh for longer, store them in a cool room, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

Make the Most of Your Blooms

While these tips help your stunning blooms from Templem last as long as possible, it’s important to remember that not all flowers have the same lifespan. For example, roses tend to stay fresh much longer than dahlias. With a little care, you can enjoy the beauty of your bouquet for as long as possible, letting your flowers brighten your space day after day.
